The Commonwealth of Dominica is an island and a state Caribbean SeaSpecifically between the territories French Overseas Guadeloupe north and Martinique the south part of Commonwealth of Nations. Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Another Caribbean nation. In the XIV century the Carib exterminated or driven from the island’s indigenous population arawak. Christopher Columbus Dominica became the November 3 of 1493, The first island discovered on his second voyage to America. The name by which Columbus named the island’s name derives from the day of the week they sighted the island, sunday. The Spanish ships often arrived during the XVI centuryBut fierce resistance by the Caribs discouraged Spain their efforts to settle there.

In 1627 the British also failed to try to capture the island. Shortly after in 1635, The French claimed the island and sent missionaries, but were unable to occupy the island because of Carib Indians and left to San Vicente in the early 1660.

For almost a century Dominica remained isolated and even more Caribs arrived from other islands to settle in Dominica, after leaving the nearby islands and take refuge in Dominica because the Europeans dominated the region. France formally ceded possession of the island to Britain in 1763That transformed the island into colony in 1805 and finally a government was established by the British. The emancipation of African slaves caused the interruption of relations with the British Empire in 1834 and 1838 becomes the first and only British Caribbean colony to have a legislature dominated by blacks. In 1896The British take control of the island and is converted into Crown Colony. Half a century later became a province of the West Indies Federation of 1958 to 1962.

After the federation dissolved, Dominica became, in 1967In an associated state of the United Kingdom and formally took over its internal affairs. On 3 November 1978, the United Kingdom granted independence to the Commonwealth of Dominica (Commonwealth of Dominica) Within the Commonwealth of Nations.

Independence did little to solve the problems that resulted from centuries of economic underdevelopment and, in mid – 1979, Political unrest led to the formation of an interim government. This was replaced after elections 1980 by a government led by the Freedom Party of Dominica under the Prime Minister Eugenia Charles, The first woman to hold that post in the Caribbean. The chronic economic problems were compounded by the severe impact of Hurricanes in 1979 and 1980. At the end of the decade 1980The economy enjoyed a healthy recovery, which weakened in the 1990s due to low prices bananas.

In the elections of February 2000The United Workers Party of Edison James (UWP) was defeated by the Dominica Labor Party (DLP) led by Roosevelt P. “Rosie” Douglas. Douglas died after only a few months after assuming command and was replaced by Pierre Charles, Also of the DLP.
